Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 by Edwin G. Burrows, Mike Wallace

5.0

Weighty like a phone-book but masterfully written and incredibly readable. It's taken me a while to get through it but it's one of the best of the many history books I've read. Excited for the 20th century follow up.

There were certainly a few slow points along the way but the book's habit of bouncing from various segments of society to economy to politics to arts and back and forth meant that if you weren't quite feeling one section, something new would shortly come along.
