Book 117: Grand Theft Horse by G. Neri

This is my third G. Neri selection. Reviewed Yummy earlier this year. Also really enjoyed his novel Ghetto Cowboy. This selection is a graphic novel.

The book is a biography of a horse trainer Gail Ruffu, Neri's cousin. Gail is an unconventional type of horse trainer, she wants to race horses without drugs, and not too soon before their bones have had a chance to mature. Gail finds herself in a contract to train and race a horse. The others in the contract force the horse to race before Gail thinks he is ready. When the horse sustains a leg injury Gail wants the horse to rest and fully recover. The others want him to race before he is completely healed. Gail being 20% owner in the horse decided to hide him so that he cannot race, thus setting off a chain of events that will lead to the California Supreme Court.

This book was great. The art was well done, the story well told. Loved it all. The book is reviewed for grade 6 and older. I think that kids like horses or horse racing will find this book fascinating, as it is a true story. My rating 5⭐️
