This is an intelligent and thoughtful novel about what it is like hiding in the closet in Ireland around the time of the decriminalisation of homosexuality there. It takes place over 6 years, written purely from Lucy’s point of view as she realises her attraction to her friend Susannah, until the two teenagers embark on a hidden relationship with each other. It focuses on what it is like to keep a vital part of herself hidden and how she ends up using her best friend, Martin, to do that.
It was insightful about what life was like at that time and also how family members and friends could turn their noses up at anyone who wasn't straight. But what captured my attention most of all was the relationship between Lucy and Susannah and how, despite their time together being brief, ultimately, they could never give up on each other.
