Corsets & Clockwork: 13 Steampunk Romances by Trisha Telep

5.0

What a brilliant, thrilling, wonderful collection of stories. I really don't think I've ever enjoyed a book of short stories more. I liked almost every story immensely. The only one that didn't grab me (and I didn't finish) was "Chickie Hill's Badass Ride." The 1960s setting and slang turned me off and the plot was weird.

I haven't read a lot of steampunk so I was surprised that this collection included so much fantasy. Surprised, but pleased. The two concepts work really well together. Also, don't be turned off by the subtitle "13 Steampunk Romances." While each story does contain a smattering of romance, kissing, and courtly intrigue, that usually wasn't the main plot. The stories contain strong female characters, clever dialogue, twists and turns, and of course plenty of clockwork. Because of the title and the female protagonists, boys probably won't pick this up, but there are a couple of stories inside that would appeal to them.

My very favorite stories included:
"Rude Mechanicals"
"Wild Magic"
"The Clockwork Corset"
"The Airship Gemini"
"The Emperor's Man"
"Tick, Tick, Boom"
