I think you can definitely tell this was written and meant for a different generation based on the language and dialogue. I was in high school when this book was hugely popular. While I personally think, looking back, this book could have used editing and taken away the problematic aspects, this book also highlights the real problems young people that are lgbtq still face in middle, high and beyond. I think this would be fine for the younger generation  just with discrepancy and content warnings provided.
