I’ve been meaning to get around to reading something from this author for quite awhile, and I’m so glad I finally did because I really loved this! Like, devoured it in a few days kind of loved it. It was full of mystery and family drama, with a light sprinkling of romance. A perfect beach read. And the setting was perfection! Well chosen and impeccably described.

This story has multiple timelines and a rotating cast of characters providing the narration. Often, I have found that this combination lends itself to a convoluted plot and flat characters that simply haven’t been fleshed out enough. In my opinion, however, this book didn’t suffer from either of those things. Instead, the plot was easy to follow and moved along briskly, but not overly so, and never failed to keep me engaged. Many of the characters felt complex, real, and relatable. Quite a few of them were mildly unlikable, while others proved themselves to be downright insufferable, For me, this is always a sign of good character development. Generally speaking, I don’t want perfect - I want realistic. And please, please, please make me feel SOMETHING strongly about the characters one way or another.

Actually this was very close to a 5 star read for me, alllllll the way up to the end. Which, unfortunately, I REALLY didn’t care for. I’ve read other reviews, and it appears I’m certainly not alone in that.

Because I’m unfamiliar with this author, I’m not sure if this book would be considered typical for her. I would love it if it was, because I’m pretty sure I could read many, many, many books like this without growing tired of them.
