This book reads as snippets from the early life of a remarkable artist and contains several important documents of times long gone in places irrevocably changed. Slouching Towards Bethlehem (the article) is a fascinating centrepiece to this collection which captures an era in decay better than perhaps any other writing I have come across. Didion, however, was an artists who’s work spanned genres and topics a plenty and as a result not every article included in this book was of personal interest to me, the quality of the prose not considered. It is precisely the quality of this prose, though, which kept me reading and which will ultimately lead me back to Joan Didion again and again. An essential inclusion in the Western literary canon even if the author herself would surpass this work on several occasions.
