The Hate U Give
by Angie Thomas
I am so happy to read something of substance for contemporary YA. Between this and 13 Reasons Why, authors are giving today's youth a reason to think about the outside world and have a conversation about it.
Average contemporary YA usually falls into the "my friend doesn't see I love him/ her" or (blech) love triangles and hormones.
This book is an important read, well-written, and so relevant right now! It's not a perfect story, but the characters are well-rounded and represent voices that have a tough time being heard.
I hope it's a good sign that it's a bestseller? Maybe this next gen will be able to figure out what we haven't been able to!
