The Taking of Jake Livingston
by Ryan Douglass
I can't say I've read too much YA Horror that focused on an LGBTQ+ main character, but after picking this one up I'm definitely ready for more! Ryan Douglass took spooky elements of paranormal horror and mixed them with the social experiences of someone who is "different" from others in their high school.
Jake Livingston is not only one of two black kids in his school aside from his brother, he's also gay. Oh, and did I mention that he is also a medium and is haunted throughout his day by ghosts stuck in their own death loop? The entire time I was rooting for Jake and was desperate to see him find a solution to his newest problem, the presence of a ghost stuck between the life and death realm. Except this time the ghost is targeting people who wronged him in his previous life, able to physically attack them without warning. This story was heartbreaking, dark, and twisted in the best way.
