He was grumpy, to be sure. Grumpy, gruff and occasionally disobliging.  But he was going to be hers. She was determined."

I didn't think it possible that I could like Return to Satterthwaite Court more than the previous book in this series, Gentleman Jim, but I really did! I read 3/4 of this book in one sitting, before forcing myself to put it down and go to sleep.  Only to lie awake for two more hours thinking about the story, the setting, the cover, predicting what might happen next, how deliciously satisfying a Mimi Matthews story is and how I should have read slower and savored it.  Really, I should have just finished reading it and then started over and read it again!  This series is marvelous!

Return to Satterthwaite Court could be read as a stand alone, Mimi Matthews does a marvelous job of filling in the blanks for new readers. But I highly recommend recommending the other two, if not first then also.  Each book in this series has bested the previous...and I have loved them all. I'm at a loss as to how Mimi is going to top this one, but I have every confidence she will.  I loved how she connected two families from two different books through their children!  A perfect tonic for fans (like me) who never want the story to end, while still remaining fresh and interesting.

Kate is a bold, unpredicatable, reckless lady who finds herself often embroiled in scandal one way or another.  She craves the independence to choose her future husband for herself.  She's a go-getter and once she puts her mind to something, she is going to get it!  Former Navy Lieutenant Charles Heywood is used to steering the ship, but his desire for adventure has dimmed and he craves a life of tranquility in the country.  His plans for the future are turned upside down the moment of his chance encounter with Kate Beresford. I loved Kate's boldness and her schemes to insert herself in Charles's life.

I was disappointed that Charles's pursuit of Kate was dealt with so swiftly, I would have enjoyed more detail in that department considering I never wanted this story to end. However, Kate pursues him so thoroughly that I guess it wasn't necessary! The banter between these two, Kate's bold pursit, combined with a potentially scandalous mystery they work together to solve will have you glued to the pages of this story!

Read this book if you like:

  • Victorian Romance
  • Grumpy/Sunshine
  • Mystery
  • Strong female protagonists

As an aside...this story had a few kisses and 20 or so uses of "Good God" or "Good Lord".  PG for sure, but I could have done without the references.  Just a personal preference. It is not marketed as Christian fiction and I have read other Mimi Matthews books before so I was not taken aback by this.  Just letting my Christian fiction followers know in the event that Mimi Matthews is a new author to you.

The next book in this series, Appointment in Bath, features Kate's brother Ivo and Meg Burton-Smythe, whose father is a long time rival of the Beresford's. It sounds like it is going to be delightful!  I really hope that there is a fifth book to the series and it features Kate's brother, James and Charles's sister, Hannah. And of course.. more of Charles and Kate!

Return to Satterthwaite Court will be availble for purchase from your local or online book retailer on April 11, 2023.  And in other exciting news, Appointment in Bath will be available June 27, 2023.  Not long of a wait at all!
