Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay

Easily one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, weaving together well-developed, nuanced characters with such skill and precision and a story that will continually make you feel a diverse range of emotions. I honestly can't tell you who was my favorite character (though in the end, it was probably Dianora), as they were all so wonderfully written, slowly developing and unraveling their history and what guided them along their tenuous paths. The ending was perfect: heart-rending, nuanced and complex. My only minor complaint was the necessary pairing of couples - I could have done without, as the subtle development of relationships was enough without the outward proclamations of love. Definitely one of my all-time favorites.
