This book is so heart-breaking and leaves a mark after reading. I liked that the author draws attention to the issue of women's rights in Afghanistan: he shows the harsh side of family life, where a wife endures everything from her husband simply because she has no right to object.
But at the same time, he shows that not all men and marriages are like that - and that it’s not just religion or customs that make people act like beasts, but more so their level of intellectual and spiritual evolution as human beings. You truly empathize with the main characters, understanding how unfair everything is - the war, the laws of society - yet you also genuinely rejoice in their small victories, their unbreakable spirit, and their determination to be happy no matter what. I will definitely read more of Khaled Hosseini's books - as soon as I recover from this one!
