The Call of the Wild by Jack London
4.0

I haven't read this book in years, but I remember that it had not been a big pull for me as a teen. Now that I'm older and wiser (that's up for debate), I can read it and appreciate the Naturalist theme. "To Build a Fire," one of Jack London's short stories, was always a favorite of mine, although I couldn't articulate why. Now I realize it must have been the deeply psychological quality to it, the internal struggle as well as the external struggle. I have a tendency to over-think everything, so reading about the internal development of a character throughout a story tends to grab me.

I would say the same for The Call of the Wild. Will the teens with whom I now need to share the book feel the same way? Oh, I'm sure many will be like me. It has a strong chance of going in one ear and out the other. I would like to pair this with a partial viewing of Into the Wild, which also has that largely internal as well as external dynamic. When reading about nature, one must SEE nature, too. Otherwise, the point of the book is lost.
