This was a quick, short read, but I found it a little boring at times. I even caught myself skipping lines in the middle. The first few chapters were engaging, especially in how they showed the Cultural Revolution and how easily rights, books, and knowledge of the world could be taken away. The story does capture the magic of reading and the feelings it can spark. However, the characters felt flat, with little growth, and some of the side characters lacked depth and seemed unnecessary.
