The Story of Silence
by Alex Myers
Glad I picked this one up. The story follows a young knight born into a noble family. They are born with a female body, but to ensure that the holdings remain in the family, they are raised as a boy.
Aurthurian motifs are woven in throughout – knights in combat, strange figures in dingy inns, and Merlin. At the same time, gender identity themes and the perennial battle of nature vs. nurture are present throughout.
Themes aside, the book makes for a fun medieval adventure novel. A misfit main character grows up with rigidly-defined expectations only to defy them, run off with a merry band of misfits, and eventually discover who they actually want to be – and of course face many perils along the way.
This title seems to show up on a lot of queer and genderqueer reading lists. And it is true that the protagonist might be considered genderqueer in today’s terms. But I think there is plenty of crossover appeal for general audiences as well.
