This is a YA book, I believe. The characters are interesting. The book isn't nearly as gory or disturbing as Ted Dekker's normal novels, which is a plus for me since I can be very freaked out by horror. And I did enjoy the book. There was sufficient suspense to keep me wanting to finish reading it. I liked the bats.
But that's pretty much all the good I can say about it. Now for negatives. There may be spoilers ahead, depending on what your definition of a .
The theme isn't quite as good as his better books though, and feels like something you would find in a Disney movie: a meaningless sentence that basically means, follow your gut instincts. And the quest was too easy to fulfill. It felt more like one of those easy quests you're given at a renaissance fair to find these objects, and some fake danger to up the stakes. But the characters weren't forced into situations where they had to make choices and thus show us more of their character. In the end, it was too easy. And though I felt like there should have been more bad guys left to fight in the end, everyone's singing and dancing as though a war is over and there isn't any more danger to fear.
