Ashenden or: The British Agent by W. Somerset Maugham

5.0

"If you do well you'll get no thanks and if you get into trouble you'll get no help. Does that suit you?"

M. very well might have said this to Bond, but no, it was R. to Ashenden, the British Secret Agent, before setting off on the book's adventures. And so, even in the first chapter, you can see the foundations of spy fiction being constructed. The espionage and tension hovers at the fringes of the story's action, just off page, but the stories are, in my opinion, more captivating for that reason.

I think we can hear George Smiley, James Bond or Bernard Samson all answer, as Ashenden does:"Perfectly."
