Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

4.0

FINALLY. A good book. Like honestly it's more of a 4.5/5

If, like me, you are a fan of fantasy books with simple lore and magic systems then this is for you.

I frequently feel bogged down by fantasy books as many attempt to be either LOTR in scale of lore, Name of the Wind in scale of magic system, and Harry Potter in scale of universal accessibility.

This book knows very clearly what it is and conveys it to the reader quite simply so we are in the world and feel invested in the characters and are not lost.

I did not know who I wanted to win. That was a definite highlight of the writing. Three mutually exclusive main characters.

Mirabella seemed to be the best queen who inspired leadership and had a tender heart.

Arsinoe had the best personality of them all and was the most relatable in her reaction to events.

Katharine I wanted to break free of the Arryns. She seemed to have the worst imprisonment.
Spoiler And yet she was the only one who didn't try to run away. Perhaps because of how terrible her imprisonment was and how much she longed for acceptance she never received.

I was curious how I'd feel about the next three books in the series at the end, but with the twists (that I guessed and then second-guessed myself out of guessing as the book progressed) I'm eager to see where this story goes.
