The Haar by David Sodergren

5.0

Love love LOVED this book. Loved the MC, Muriel and her plight to stand against the big baddie, a billionaire American buying up Scottish villages and turning them into vacation spots and golf courses, even as the remaining villagers give in to his monetary offers and move away one by one (or don't take his offers and get unalived). Classic setup with an MC you love and a baddy you hate. Enter The Blob, a thing she saves from the seashore that, with a little bit of sustenance (a little bit of blood, or a human), can morph to look like anyone, even Muriel's long lost-at-sea husband Billy. Enter the sweet romance of this book as Muriel is able to enjoy being with her husband, feeling young again, remembering their time together, and getting a chance to properly say goodbye. The Blob can only retain this form when it is healthy and well-fed though. That's okay, there's a bunch of nasty people that work for the billionaire. Enter the horror of this book as The Blob devours the baddies in the most gruesome of ways (EXCELLENT).
Also, the last part of this book is a memoir of the author's grandma and her remembrances growing up, falling in love, and raising a family during World War 2. Just like Muriel, it was very sweet and touching as well as fascinating and sad to see how she was able to do so much with so little.
