After the Forest by Kell Woods

4.0

4.5 rounded down to 4. This book is the perfect read for anyone looking for a fairy tale retelling for spooky season.

After the Forest is a Hansel and Grettle reimaging that follows an adult Greta navigating life escaping the witch. The town has whispered about her and her brother for years, but nothing has ever come of the rumors. A mysterious bear sighting in the woods is the first in a series of odd events that casts suspicion on Greta. Will she weather the rumors as she always has? Or is it time for her to show the world the real women hiding behind the story?

I loved After the Forest. It felt familiar and fresh all at once; both a reimaging and a whole new fairy tale. What captivated me the most was the magic, particularly how it was accessed and where it drew power from. I also really enjoyed how the villages suspicions were fueled both by witchcraft and the recent war. They were a perfect parallel. And the romance... I was hooked and my heart threatened to break when the angst hit.
