I wasn’t drawn in by any of the characters, who all felt too flat and stereotyped or underwritten, so I didn’t massively care about what had happened to the victim or why the main character had ended up in prison (not a spoiler - it’s the opening of the book).  I think the Donna Tartt comparisons are unhelpful because they set you up for a deeper and more complex book, and put a lot of unfair expectations onto the author here. It’s rare that I abandon a book, but I have better things (I hope!) in my reading list for January!
