This was gorgeous. I was kind of taken aback at how great it was.
Vel’s arc is done so very well. Those first few chapters were hard and dark, but watching him come back to himself and grow, trust his body again, and open up to love was beautiful. Seeing a closeted queer person slowly begin to realize they are safe, accepted, and capable of being openly loved was especially moving.
And Cae was just lovely. A dream man, but not in an impossible standard/unbelievable fantasy kind of way. He is just kind to his core.
I loved watching them stumble around their attraction to each other and bloom into this new relationship.
The world-building was interesting and fun. I love, love, loved seeing queer, trans, and nonbinary people as a conscious inclusion to the world/setting.
It wasn’t all romance either! The plot was there and had consequences! And the twist legitimately gagged me. The emotional stakes were high and present throughout the book. The murder plot never got thrown into the background in favor of the romance (or vice versa!!) and it was all woven together in a way I thought was very skillful.
I would read a hundred of these. Looking forward to reading the sequel soon!
