Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Volume 1: Herr Dr. Tenma
by Naoki Urasawa
【5 stars】Review on the whole series |
I have my eyes on this manga series for years now, ever since I found them while strolling through the aisle of Bookoff. I became a fan of Naoki Urasawa after reading his work Pluto. So when I saw Monster, I naturally felt attracted to it. But the right time for reading it hadn’t come around until last week - after I and my share housemate went to a hobby store near our house. There were all kind of games and old mangas there, and Monster was one of them. I was torn between many mangas but I picked Monster to read after in the end.
And hell yeah after that was an epic journey.
I read all of the volumes in a few days.
Monster is different from the kind I always read which is shounen manga. It has a very well-planned plot with many clues, many characters which seemed irrelevant at first but came together nicely in the end. Every character appears with a well-written background and has something to serve the plot, and they seems irrelevant but are connected in a convincing way. I found this kind of well-planned and well-executed plot is rare these days, especially in mangas.
The historical settings gave the book an extra mysterious atmosphere, deepened the suspense.
I was so suck in this book that I cancelled all of my plans on day-offs.
