The Cellar by Minette Walters

Oh bummer. This was awesome until the final page. I loved it. Completely fucked up. I’ve read a couple reviews on here saying that by the end, you don’t know who’s worse, Muna or the family who stole her (and enslaved her, and mutilated her, and tortured her, and raped her). I’m gonna firmly sit on Muna’s side with this one. Fuck that family, you hammer them to death if you want Muna. You do you.

This was a good one... until the final page. I’m not entirely sure how it actually ended? It was extremely quick and vague in those final moments, and I feel like I just invested myself into this story and just... didn’t get an ending at all.
Sure we can wonder if the devil was real all along and took Muna and Ebuka in those final moments or if the devil really was in her head all along, but honestly, a quick paragraph doesn’t wrap it up. I don’t mind ambiguous endings but this was just a random paragraph chucked in too quickly and didn’t really give you anything. It didn’t fit. There was no lead up to it. I feel like I’ve turned a movie off five minutes before the end. It looks like most people on here agree about the ending too.
It’s my only criticism. The bulk of this book was on point, and I want to give it more praise.... but it didn’t have an ending.

I’m going to read more of this author in future. I do think she’s excellent at what she does.
