Greater Good by Timothy Zahn

adventurous mysterious reflective tense slow-paced

4.5

Picking up almost immediately after the events of Chaos Rising, Greater Good explores the greatest weaknesses of the Chiss Ascendancy and ties this prequel series even more firmly to some of the more confusing aspects of the 2017 series. Though not as fast-paced or emotionally riveting as Chaos Rising, this second book in the Ascendancy trilogy does a lot of work to set up what's sure to be an action-packed finale.

Even though I prefer the more fast-paced Thrawn books, I still find myself completely obsessed with books like Greater Good because Zahn provides so much important and necessary detail in them. Some of the scenes might drag a bit, but I know the information provided will be important. I know it's set up for something massive later on. I genuinely appreciate that about Zahn's writing. I also loved getting to see how the way the Ascendancy is politically structured is almost the perfect set up for civil war. As we see, those family ties and the hierarchal structure are much too easy to manipulate. But that makes for a really engrossing and exciting story.

Highlights for me this book were Samakro being a suspicious little brat, Rancher Chiss, Quilori still being a menace, all the Chiss being literally insane when it comes to family pride. Downsides were too little Ar'alani, but I've been assured she gets lots of page time later on.

I think it bears repeating: Timothy Zahn is simply a genius. Can't wait for Lesser Evil.
