Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen

4.0

What a fun read this was! I learned a lot about Bruce Springsteen that I did not know.

I was pleased to learn that Bruce is a sensitive and thoughtful artist-- not just the rock and roll hit grubber I think we often assume that rock stars may be. Bruce is the real deal, the logical successor to Woody Guthrie. Also, Bruce counts Flannery O'Connor among his heros....sigh, me too.

Also, Bruce has been in therapy and talks about it quite a bit. His dad was an undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenic-- what a sad and stressful childhood Bruce had trying to make sense of his father's quite seething.

I loved hearing about his courtship with Patti Scialfa-- she is also a formidable singer-songwriter. I love her solo albums. And Bruce is a proud and glowing papa-- I also enjoyed the love and tenderness in his voice when he talks about the different personalities of his children.

The best part of Bruce's book was his voice-- he is honest about who he is and how he operates. I appreciate the authenticity that is the artist Bruce Springsteen.
