I just read this book for the second time - the first time I read it was three years ago. In my previous review past me said I might enjoy it more the next time I read it, and I was right!
A lot has changed for me in the last three years and I think I was able to see this book in a different light.
I really enjoyed it. It's lyrical, reflective, emotional. It deals with themes of identity, past selves, making yourself, found family and love. I like that the characters aren't perfect and have made mistakes and do not judge eachother for their mistakes, how this life is an opportunity to try again. I think that's an interesting philosophy to have.
Some of the themes also feel relevant for anyone with mental illness, for people who maybe struggle with their identity or past or loving themself or trying to see themselves as one dimensional or trying to be perfect. I think it was interesting the bit where Immy listens to the thoughts of her past selves for once and they actually get quieter after being heard, as this is what having OCD feels like - if you try and push thoughts away or avoid them they just get louder, but if you just accept their presence then you learn to live with them.
This book left me wanting more though, it left me hungry. I wanted to know more about Henry and Frederick, I wanted to understand more how their lives and transitions happen, what this looks like, whether they are physically reborn everything or just metaphorically. I think if this book was twice as long I would have just eaten it up. It inspired me to write some verse poetry of my own.
Definitely enjoyed.
