Flowers for Algernon was a beautiful read. Seeing the rise and fall of Charlie’s mental capacity was first inspiring and then bitter. The book let me reflect on my own knowledge, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills, and inspired to push myself further. In the later half of the book it was painful to see the inevitability of his falling away dawn on him, and then to see his rapid decline into the cave. Once again I found myself thinking about my own experiences, this time reminding myself to take the time to talk to and connect with my loved ones while we still have the ability. I feel that this book is a reminder to be kind to others, especially to those we do not understand, as well as a lesson in existential thinking, and a reminder to feel grateful for what we have. What is consciousness? What role does memory play in shaping who we are? How can we make the most of our time and abilities?
