French Kiss
by Sarra Manning
As a teenager, Sarra Manning was my literary queen. To my best friend and I, it seemed as though her stories could do no wrong and were made just for us. I read the Diary of a Crush series when I was 15-16 years old. I remember loving the series, but I couldn't remember much else besides the names Edie and Dylan being the main characters. Oh, and the way she describes Dylan's face as "all hard planes and angles". That description always stuck with me for some reason.
I'll admit, I initially didn't feel the same love for Edie and Dylan like I did before. As the story progressed, though, I found myself seeing all the reasons why I had loved them in the first place. Their romance is as complicated as teenage romances tend to be. Looking back at this from my teenage eyes, I can totally see why I was in love with this. 15 year old me would have given this 5 stars instantly.
The characters, as with any Manning novel, are quirky and distinct. Each character is easy to tell apart, even Shona and Edie who seem to have so many similar interests. I think the characters are what makes a Sarra Manning novel, and they're the reason why I'll keep going back to her work.
