How Sondheim Can Change Your Life by Richard Schoch

3.5

Such an interesting concept and a solid read. I always enjoy knowing what folks get out of a piece of art, especially if they find meaning and impact in that work, and this was a cool approach to take. I appreciated the insights it provided into the author, but that it wasn’t all about their own life or lens. Those small glimpses into his life allowed me to fill in the space and think about how I related to Sondheim’s work.

And while I didn’t expect to come away from this with a deeper appreciation for the Sondheim shows I’ve been lukewarm about, I certainly did. The discussion about Assassins in particular made me look at that show (and its reception) with a new perspective.
