I was super excited for this book; a fun, Philly-centric YA to sink my teeth into. In theory, it had everything I wanted. I loved the idea of this blind date plot line, and I enjoyed both love interests for our FMC. The pop culture references felt a little bit overwhelming, but didn't take away from my read.
My main issue, and the reason I could not get through? This was almost so YA that it became so wildly unbelievable. **I need to say- I like YA, and I absolutely do not need spice in a romance to enjoy it.** The FMC is supposed to be a junior in high school, so I assume 16ish. Her love interests are (1) the same age as her and (2) a freshman in college. The FMC was so immature in her thoughts and feelings that I was almost uncomfortable with the idea of an 18-year-old college freshman being into her. She read almost like a 13-year-old. This would have been fine if there had been some explanation, like a sheltered upbringing, or coming to terms with her sexuality. The only explanation for her being a "late bloomer" is that she is obsessed with field hockey and does nothing else.
I wanted to enjoy this book so much, but the way the FMC acted and thought felt so unrealistic for a 16/17-year-old, that I couldn't commit to believing the story.
I did enjoy the narration, and think this read would be great for an actual 11-16 year old, but as someone that experienced being 16/17, I don't think I can really recommend or enjoy it.
