Black Powder War by Naomi Novik

4.0

I needed a break from this series after the first two books, but I was glad to get back to it. Laurence and Temeraire continue to be sympathetic and entertaining characters.

Probably for me the biggest flaw in this book is a middle section devoted to warfare that drafted a bit. This is probably entirely personal preference--I find most war stories boring and dreary and reading about the details of battles and fights makes my eyes glaze over a bit. But luckily there is plenty of other things to like here (I happened to really enjoy the travelogue section, although I'm sure that's not to everyone's taste), and the plot/character/story impact of the war is interesting.
