Uzumaki: Spiral into Horror, Vol. 2. by Junji Ito

4.0

I liked the first volume better. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still pretty good. The chapters involving the pregnant women and their babies are a couple of my favorites so far, the art style is still gorgeous, and overall I quite enjoyed reading it.

My biggest issue is with the protagonist, Kirie. In the first volume I thought she was lame but in this one she somehow managed to be even more useless than ever. It 's unbelievable. Kirie does nothing more than scream whenever something scary happens. It's even stated at the end that the only reason she’s still alive is because her boyfriend, Suichi, keeps showing up to save her. I have a question, why isn’t Suichi the main character? He actually has personality and motivations.

Another thing that weirds me out is how nobody seems to be noticing that there are strange spiral-theme things going on in the town. During the first volume you could explain it by saying that all the paranormal stuff had logical explanations, or the amount of people that witnessed was so small that, if they said anything, others would think they are crazy. At the end of the volume and throughout this one, the weird things are huge and public. A kid turns into a snail in front of 100 people. So why is nobody saying anything? You could say that the spirals are doing something to prevent people from acknowledging what's happening, but why are Kirie and Suichi not affected?
