When Alex receives a cryptic messages signed "M", at a crime scene identical to the one of a murderer Alex watched be executed mere hours before, he starts to question whether an innocent man was put to death? What ensues is a series of murders leading to a game of cat and mouse that will have Alex reliving some of his most gruesome cases of the past.

This twenty-seventh installment in the Alex Cross series got off to a very quick start! With his signature short chapters, Patterson delivers a fast-paced, high stakes read packed with tons of action and twists. From the very first pages, I was sucked into the chase, and particularly enjoyed the dual timeline structure, which added another dimension to the story. There is definitely a lot of foreshadowing in this one, and yet it still kept me guessing. The family dynamic, I've come to know and love, made a pleasant return with both Janie and Ali playing a role. I'd definitely say this has been my favourite Cross installment in awhile, with the ending not providing all the answers, which sets up nicely for the next book. Overall, a compulsive read.

"If I'd learned anything from Nana Mama, it was this: If you've screwed up, admit it and face the consequences. If you've crossed the line, admit it and face the consequences. If you've had lapses in judgement or viewed something with eyes full of prejudice, admit it and face the consequences."
