Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

Poignant.
evoking a keen sense of sadness or regret
Poignant and unexpectedly beautiful. This novel has a way of sneaking up on you and ripping out your heart when you're not even looking.
I'm usually not the biggest fan of YA contemporary- it tends to be too mopey and melodramatic for my taste. I can better deal with angst and drama when it takes place within a thrilling plot or a fantastical setting.
This is a small story set in a smaller town with pretty trees; the trees are basically all this town has going for it.
The trees, and the people who climb them, sit in them, and love around them. They won me over.
This is a story about the quiet sadness of loss, about the humor and tragedy of fate, and about regret and redemption and love and pain and the beauty in it all.
Melina Marchetta's words literally make me get a lump in my throat and a stinging behind my eyes. The subject matter is sad, but it's more than that. Her words are evocative and transcend their meaning to create an experience. I didn't just cry, I was moved.
A wonderful and surprising book that I would recommend to many.
