Max and the Multiverse
by Zachry Wheeler
One morning when Max wakes up, his cat can talk. A few mornings later, dinosaurs stalk the earth again. Then, it's the future. Max has the opportunity to leave Earth, and he does, heading to Europa. There he gets caught up in an intergalactic war.
For how short this book is, it packs a lot in and has a lot of heart. I loved Ross the cat as a character. He had great cat energy and was just so sassy.
The whole set up was very intriguing, with Max hopping between parallel worlds with often hilarious variations on the reality we know.
I struggled for a bit to figure out why this book wasn't blowing me away completely because it definitely had all the markings of a fantastic book, but it had too much going on for the length I think. I didn't feel like I got to know any of the characters that well, and instead we were thrown into the action almost immediately. I think this could have done with a bit more time spent just introducing the characters and a bit of the past.
