I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

4.0

Audiobooked this one. And my one looming thought, after – whoa – all that, is this: Why does she intone a voice for her boyfriend Steven that sounds like a Jennifer Coolidge impression? That's what my (big) ears heard, anyway.

What a life. What a listen. I heard it in the car, on walks, doing dishes, picking up dog dung in the yard – dear reader, I inhaled this. Jennette's voice, and her writing voice, are so approachable. It's like a comedic, warmed-up and yet still matter-of-fact Sarah Koenig (of the Serial podcast), at least for me. And her upbringing, from somewhat typical family schtuff to Mormon-faith hubbubs to child-star schtuff, is quirky and fun and sad.

Tragic, hilarious, despondent, uplifting and ultimately resilient. I'm glad she told her story. I'm glad she owns her story. And I'm not above going to the music apps and tryna listen to her fledgling ... failed? ... what exactly? ... country album. From the early-going, almost jaw-dropping familial stuff (her mom's ways of ensuring her "success") to the latter-page twist (holy ish), this book is a RIDE.
