Why We Broke Up
by Daniel Handler
If I had a physical copy of this, there is no doubt that I would have thrown it against the wall.
Min and Ed are breaking up. So, Min is writing a letter about why they broke up to put in a box with a collection of items from their time together.
Let me tell you, I have never been so frustrated by a book so fast.
The narration took a while to get used to and I'm still not sure it's something I really enjoyed. However, it was loads better than the characters in this book. Ed was pure and utter garbage. From the first time he was introduced, I could tell he was going to act like this little POS that thought he was entitled to everything he wanted and was going to get it. Guess what? That's exactly what this garbage fire of a person did. At one point, he literally ripped a rubber band from Min's hair because he liked it better down. SHE'S COOKING YOU ASSWIPE. LEAVE HER ALONE. JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE DATING DOESN'T MEAN YOU OWN HER AND HAVE CONTROL OVER HOW SHE LOOKS ALL THE TIME.
Min was also a hot mess. Setting aside that she ignored multiple red flags from the garbage she was dating, she is one of those individuals that can't have a boyfriend and be friends with people. She dropped all her friends like they were a hot potato to focus on her disgusting boyfriend.
She made it impossible for me to have sympathy for her during this break-up. I had no sympathy and instead was rolling my eyes because she was so eager to be loved by someone like Ed that she ignored everything and jumped into a horrible relationship. I guess the positive is by the end she was admitting how dumb she was for doing that, but sweet lord.
On the positive side, the illustrations were utterly magnificent. They were beautifully done and I found myself thumbing through them multiple times, admiring their beauty. Truly wonderful.
But, that was the only thing wonderful about this book.
