Son of the Storm by Suyi Davies Okungbowa

5.0

LOVED THIS! What a compelling beginning to a series. The world-building was so vivid, I felt utterly transported! This fantasy world is inspired by West-African lore with other nations inspired by Northern Africa, enhanced with a great map. I'm glad to see this kind of setting being more prominently featured in epic fantasy.

Bullet review:
- West-African inspired
- Epic Fantasy
- Scholar MC
- Excellent characters
- Multiple POVs
- Creative magic system
- Complex politics

An interesting feature is that we get to see the POV of the "villain", which I thought made the narrative nuanced and layered. The thematic aspects of this book were also interesting and cleverly explored. They ranged from identity, colorism, segregation, coming-of-age, societal expectations, grief... This was a brilliant read and I cannot wait for the sequel!
TW: violence, gore, immolation...
