Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts
by Rebecca Hall
challenging

This wasn’t exactly what I was expecting when I started it, I thought it would be more about the revolts led by women than it was, but why it wasn’t that was just as fascinating to me. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that there is very little in the way of historical record about women-led slave revolts, so what Dr. Hall did find was quite impressive. I ended up really enjoying the meshing of her story of the research she did with the historical story. I also thought the art was a great addition to the story. It’s not a style I normally like, but it fit this story so well and added an extra layer to the work overall. I would definitely recommend it to history fans and graphic novel fans and fans of memoirs, too.
