I quite like Betty Smith's books and Joy in the Morning is second only to A Tree Grows in Brookyln.
What I love about Joy in the Morning is that you are able to fully immerse yourself in the lives of the two main characters, Carl and Annie. While there is more perspective from Annie, the interactions that each have with their fellows and with each other are believable and realistic.
