Its not inherently bad, it just wasn't great. It was very slow to pick up and easy to put down until at least the 35% mark. Retrospectively I understand it served a purpose for the story and FMC but it really is difficult for the reader to keep at it when it's so bland and repetitive.
Wished the MMC and FMC had more chemistry. They were attracted to one another physically but missing any conversations that would build intimacy apart from moment that were stolen from one another rather than given.
The sex without condoms, protection or conversation before hand is such a red flag. He should have been upfront about his state rather than retrospectively announcing he was clean.
The final denouement was pretty anticlimactic.
I enjoyed the plethor of secondary characters. I enjoyed the glimpses into Alaskan remote life.
But the romance was lackluster and developed into burning lust as soon as they accepted that they didn't want to retch at each other. The paranormal was coming too late into the story. It would have been more interesting to season some paranormal into the first hazy bit of the story to keep reader interested.
