“There was nothing more liberating than a closely knit sequence of lies. So this was why people became writers.” I get the impression it felt good for McEwan to get this Brexit novella off his chest. Being Ian McEwan, his rant is fictional and very well-written, even if depicting the Brexiteers as a Kafkaesque army of cockroaches is more than a little problematic.
