I just want everyone who reads this book to remember the title. Just keep it in mind when you're nearing the end of the book.
I'm always a sucker for an unreliable narrator and Joe is about as unreliable as it gets. The theme of not trusting your own mind is always a thrill, but it felt very forced and kind of like a cop out in this book.
I didn't find it very scary, the characters they meet along the way during the challenge just fell a little flat for me. I understand where the thoughts were headed and the "high stakes" they were presented with but those bits just felt a little corny (maybe I'm not interpreting it correctly and they were meant to be that way but I'm unsure.) The throw in of dinosaurs also threw me for a loop.
Helen as a character was all over the place, first she's intimidating, then she acts like an excited teenager, then her mental health struggles are brought up but nothing really comes of it? I really wanted to like her as a character but unfortunately besides her past nothing about her was consistent.
Joe just kind of sucked. He was just a jerk for 90% of it. The "twist" in the final battle of the ninth room I could see coming from a mile away.
I will say that it was a quite light and easy read, even though it took me on the most bizarre adventure I've read thus-far, it was still an adventure in its own way. I'd be willing to read something else from Jeremy in hopes it would be just a bit more consistent.
