The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin

5.0

“How can we prepare for the future if we won’t acknowledge the past?”
“But there are none so frightened, or so strange in their fear, as conquerors. They conjure phantoms endlessly, terrified that their victims will someday do back what was done to them—even if, in truth, their victims couldn’t care less about such pettiness and have moved on. Conquerors live in dread of the day when they are shown to be, not superior, but simply lucky.”

I started last year with the first book in The Broken Earth trilogy, so it was only fitting that I ended last year with the final book. What a fantastic series. I certainly see why Jemisin won the Hugo Award three years in a row. I could quote these books endlessly, and I'd love to reread them again at some point. I think the first book was my favorite but books two and three do not disappoint. Jemisin’s world building is incredible. This is a trilogy of slavery, ownership, redemption, and revolution, of the relationship between a mother and daughter, and of humanity and the Earth. There aren’t any heroes, everyone is tainted but don’t those make for better reads? In this case it did, and I highly recommend this series.
