Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk
4.0
Annabelle lives quietly with her family in rural Pennsylvania. But that quiet is shattered when Betty moves in with her grandparents. Betty is your typical mean girl of today even if the book is set in 1943. She starts bullying Annabelle almost immediately and her bullying escalates quickly. When classmate Ruth gets really hurt, Betty blames Toby, a wondering WWI vet. Annabelle knows Toby is innocent and didn't do the things Betty accuses him of. When Betty goes missing however, it is hard to convince anyone else of his innocence. Annabelle decides it is up to her to find out what really happened to Betty and to clear Toby's name.
While Wolf Hollow was a pretty slow read to start with I ended up loving it in the end. It is not a book everyone will appreciate, but it is definitely one with awards potential. i really enjoyed the fact that Annabelle's parents listened to her and didn't dismiss her thoughts out of hand. They helped her because they knew it was the right thing to do. I thought there was a very timeless message about veterans, both how they survive war and how they are treated once they return. My one complaint was how one-dimensional Betty was. She was just mean and evil for no good reason. It was tragic what happened to her, but she didn't even redeem herself in the end. I wish her character would have had a bit more depth.
