When Sea Becomes Sky by Gillian McDunn

Nature vs progress is a sub theme in this story about processing and living with grief. It's summer on the island where siblings Bex and Davey live with their mom and dad. Bex and Davey spend their days paddling the row boat over to 'the thumb' - a portion of the island that looks like a thumb. As the drought continues, Bex and Davey make a discovery and try to solve a mystery. The reader is aware that something isn't quite 'normal' with Davey but the truth, when revealed, is shocking. This is a good read for an older middle-reader, especially one who is grieving a loss.
