A great twist on a fairy tale. I really appreciate the magic in this book, and per usual for Kingfisher, I want to spend more time in this world, learning about the magic and history. Enough is revealed for the story and themes to come together, but I want more!
I also really appreciated the protagonist’s point of view on heroism. I found her inner monologue really relevant to this moment and I think it stresses the importance of being in community/collaboration with others.

Graphic: Body horror
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Suicidal thoughts, Violence, Trafficking
Minor: Sexual violence, Torture, Xenophobia, Suicide attempt
Domestic abuse is a huge theme of this book, though the narrator doesn’t experience it directly.
Body horror noted specifically in regard to bones and teeth. There’s a fair bit of blood too.
