Outlawed by Anna North
4.0

Ada lives in a small town in Fairchild in “the year of our lord 1894.” Her mother is a mid-wife and Ada assists her, learning all about being a midwife herself and other healing techniques.

Ada gets married and after one year is still unable to get pregnant. She tries things out of desperation but nothing works and she ends up being kicked out of her town.

Ada ends up with The Kid and the Hole in the Wall Gang. She becomes an outlaw.

I cannot imagine being female in 1894. Knowing my brain and mouth, I would have surely been hung for witchcraft. I’ve never read anything like this book before. It made me feel angry and uncomfortable at times, which I believe is the mark of good writing. North brought to life a feminist western and showcased how women were only around to be baby making factories and if they could not do that they were shunned, or worse, killed.

I felt that North did a great job of bringing to light real problems from this time period and wrapping them up into a well-told story. I was also happy with the way the book ended.
