A Horse Walks Into a Bar by David Grossman
3.0

I’ve heard of comedians dying on stage before, but not like this! In what’s essentially a book-length monologue, a washed-up Israeli comic self-immolates in the world’s most unfunny stand-up routine. (Sample jokes: “Mengele was our family doctor.” “You’re from the settlements? Then who’s beating up the Arabs?”) He’s slicing his soul while dragging us through tortured histories—his own & Israel’s. Unsettling & original, even if it never really sticks the punchline. A failed performance, perhaps, but you can’t look away.
